Firewood update 2021
The Air Quality (Domestic Solid Fuels Standards) (England) Regulations 2020, UK Statutory Instruments 2020 No. 1095 and how this will affect wood sales and use.
Due to the new government legislation coming into force from May 2021 we have updated our firewood sales procedures. The legislation is essentially a good thing for everyone’s health and wellbeing and for most of us, there will be little change in practice.
Why? Burning unseasoned firewood increases the harm to health due to the large amount of particulate matter and smoke that is released into the air. It is also a very inefficient use of the energy source as you are in effect, burning out the moisture instead of heating your house! It also leads to blocked flues and sooty stoves which will require sweeping more frequently to prevent damage and possibly chimney fires.
What do we need to do?
From May 2021 all of our firewood sales will be seasoned (defined in the legislation as less than 20% moisture content). All sales of wood for immediate combustion in domestic properties must include the relevant information and the ‘Ready to Burn’ mark as identified in the regulations.
We will still be able to supply unseasoned wood in volumes over 2 cubic metres (around 3 builders Bulk Bags, or 9 Barrow Bags or a van load of rings or uncut timber) supplied with the following warning;
“This wood is not suitable for burning until it has been dried. You should not burn wood until it has a moisture content of 20% or less.”
So, in summary, if you would like to purchase unseasoned timber to season yourself, you can still do this if the volume of timber is over 2 cubic metres. This equates to a “van load” as per our log sales listings.

All the timber will arrive in manageable sections and will vary from larger rings to smaller sections above 5 inches in diameter and in varying lengths and will be ready for both sawing and splitting.

Seasoned logs availability update:
Due to the increased demand on our firewood sales we are temporarily unable to supply seasoned logs for sale (unseasoned firewood is still available). We hope to have improved our systems to be able to prepare more timber which will be kiln dried by next year.
Please let us know if you would like to be on our waiting list for November 2023 deliveries by sending an email to zoe@acmearb.com with your preferred volume of timber to help us ensure we have sufficient volumes of dried firewood in time for delivery.
